Sitka fishing is some of the best in all of the state of Alaska.
Located on an island at the northern end of the Inside Passage, the town is known for its excellent salmon and halibut fishing, and there are many charter companies that offer half day trips to cruise ship passengers visiting the town.
The varieties of salmon that are most prevalent in Sitka are Coho (silver) and King (chinook) salmon.
The peak seasons for each of these fish are:
king salmon - May through July
coho salmon - mid July through September
halibut - June through mid September
Nonresidents of Alaska are limited in the number of king (chinook) salmon they can catch.
The limit is two king salmon 28" or longer during the month of May and one king salmon 28" or longer the rest of the year. There is also a yearly limit of four king salmon per person.
According to the Alaska Department of Fish and game, the five year average for fishermen in the area is one coho salmon per hour of fishing time.
So the odds are that you will have a very successful and exciting trip. Of course, an added benefit is the incredible natural surroundings of the area. Just being out on the water in this pristine environment is a reward in and of itself.
All in all, Sitka fishing is plentiful and high quality. It's a great way to spend a an afternoon or even an entire vacation.
