Sitka Alaska weather is heavily influenced by its location on the outer edge of the Inside Passage, directly facing the Atlantic Ocean.
Sitka is very wet and often overcast, the town receiving over 86 inches of precipitation each year.
The ocean has a moderating effect on Sitka’s weather, keeping temperatures averaging above freezing in the winter and comfortably cool in the summer months, during which the average high is around 60 degrees.
If you are taking an Alaska cruise that stops in Sitka during the late spring through summer, you will want to bring rain gear and a couple sweaters too.
Plan to dress in layers, as the weather on the ocean can change rapidly, and a cloudy, drizzly morning can quickly warm up as the overcast burns off.

While June is the driest month of the year in Sitka, the town receives frequent rain all summer long.
The rain is what keeps the surrounding rainforest green and lush, and, in fact, I find that the clouds and mist only enhance the area’s beauty.
Winter months are moderate and rainy. The town only receives about 39 inches of snow a year, and the snow is interspersed with heavy rains.
Overall, Sitka Alaska weather is probably closer to what you would expect for Seattle or Vancouver: temperate, wet, and never too hot or too cold.
