A Guide to Seward - Insider Vacation Tips

Seward, Alaska is a very picturesque and quaint seaside port town on the Alaska coast, about three hours due south of Anchorage, on the southern end of the magnificent Kenai Peninsula.

A fair number of northbound Alaska cruise itneraries end here, with passengers then being transported by bus or train to either the airport in Anchorage or to their inland tour destination.

But aside from being a popular cruise departure and terminus point, the town as a wide variety of attractions in town and in the surrounding area, and it is a great place to spend time either before or after a cruise, or while on a land tour of Alaska.

By far the most popular day trip from town is a boat tour of the spectacular Kenai Peninsula, including Kenai Fjords National Park.

But in addition to Kenai, there are plenty of other attractions to make your stay here fun and rewarding.

The shops and restaurants in town do not disappoint and are of surprisingly good quality and variety.

In addition, the following are some of the highlights of the town:

  • Alaska SeaLife Center - take a self-guided tour of this $50 million marine research and educational center. This unique hybrid research center/aquarium has a wide variety of local marine life on display.
  • IdidaRide Sled Dog Real Alaska Tour - A day-long tour of historic old town, the Exit Glacier, and take a summertime dog sled ride (on wheels!). This is perhaps the best and most comprehensive tour of the area. A great way to spend a day!
  • Ocean Fishing Excursions and Charters - fish for Salmon, Sea Bass, and Lingcod. The fishing here is absolutely fantastic. A great place to get in some fishing if you didn't get to do any on your cruise.
  • Exit Glacier Tours - take a tour of the only part of Kenai accessible by road. Includes a rather easy 3/4 mile hike to the base of the glacier.
Of course, you can always spend the day shopping and exploring the amazing coastline.




Seward is a small town, but it is situated on spectacular coastline and is well worth the visit.
