Moraine Lake

A Guide to Moraine Lake Lodge and Activities

Moraine Lake is one of the gems of the Canadian Rockies and one of the most beautiful lakes in North America.

Few places can match the natural beauty and serenity of this pristine Alpine lake. While less well known than nearby Lake Louise, Morain Lake is no less breathtaking.

The Moraine Lake Lodge is a small luxury hotel located on the shore of the iridescent turquoise lake, in one of the most beautiful settings you can imagine.

Moraine Lake

The lake is located some nine miles north of Lake Louise and 40 miles north of the town of Banff, in the heart of Banff National Park. (see Banff National Park map here.)

The parking at the lake can get a bit tight, since the lot is rather small, but the park provides a free shuttle (with park entrance fee) that runs every 30 minutes, so if you are staying at Lake Louise, this might be the best option to explore the area.

While the lake is smaller than neighboring Lake Louise, many consider it even more beautiful, which will be hard to believe once you see Lake Louise.

But this lake is truly spectacular, with its light turquoise water and gorgeous alpine backdrop, which includes the 11,650 foot Mount Temple, the third highest peak in the Canadian Rockies.

The lodge was designed by renowned architect Arthur Erickson and has a rustic yet luxurious feel. With just 33 rooms, including 8 in the main lodge and the rest in individual cabins, the resort is very intimate, the perfect spot for a honeymoon or romantic getaway.

Each room has its own lake-view balcony, perfect for relaxing and taking in the magnificent view. The cabins each have their own fireplaces as well, making for an amazingly romantic environment.

The lodge also has a good little cafe and a wonderful restaurant, so if you can't stay overnight, you can still enjoy a wonderful meal while enjoying one of the best views in the world.

Moraine Lake is a must-see for all visitors to the Canadian Rockies. Trust me, you will love this place!
