The Kenai Peninsula is one of the most spectacular regions in all of Alaska.
Located south-southwest of Anchorage across Turnagain Arm, Kenai includes such well known towns as Seward and Homer, along with many smaller and less famous but equally picturesque towns.
The peninsula is also home to Kenai Fjords National Park, which is accessible almost exclusively by boat.
The sole section of the park that can be reached by car is the Exit Glacier, which is accessible via a short drive from Seward, on the southern end of the peninsula.
The town of Seward is a three hour drive from Anchorage, and makes a great day trip for those visiting the city.
The drive takes you through some of the region’s most beautiful landscapes, including Turnagain Arm, the long, pristine bay in which Beluga whales can be frequently be seen swimming from the road.
From Seward, day cruises are also available that explore the tidewater glaciers and stunning bays of Kenai Fjords National Park.
The picturesque seaport of Homer lies five hours from Anchorage at the terminus of Route 1, the westernmost end of North America’s paved highway system.
The ride through the center of the peninsula to Homer is nothing short of spectacular, heading through the heart of the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge, home to grizzly and black bears, moose, caribou, wolves, Dall sheep, mountain goats, lynx, wolverines, and eagles.
The Kenai Peninsula makes a great day trip or overnight trip for those beginning or ending their Alaska cruise in Anchorage.
