A Juneau hotel or motel can be the perfect home base if you are looking to explore the middle and upper portions of the Alaska Inside Passage.
Juneau is the largest city in the region (with just 30,000 residents) and thus has the best amenities.
It also is well situated to explore everything from the Tracy Arm Fjord to Glacier Bay to the adjacent Mendenhall Glacier and Juneau Icefields.

There are two main areas for Juneau lodging, downtown and near the airport.
Being a small city, the downtown area is hardly intimidating and is incredibly picturesque.
The downside to downtown is that it is near the cruise ship docks.
On a typical summer day, as many as 10,000 cruise ship passengers can pour into the downtown area, making it lively but a bit more crowded than normal.
The hotels and motels located in the vicinity of the airport also have the advantage of being close to the Mendenhall Glacier.
While Juneau is a small city, it is Geographically constrained by the alpine peaks, glaciers, ice fields, and waterfront.
Therefore, there are few major roads, and these roads can get congested.
