Haines, Alaska

Haines Alaska is a historic town dating to the days of the Yukon gold rush. In fact, perhaps no town was more storied or vital to the gold rush, the biggest such event the world has ever seen.

Today, Haines is a quaint town that maintains its unique charm and history, set in one of the most beautiful fjords in Alaska’s inside passage, about 80 miles north of Juneau, and 15 miles from the town of Skagway.

Haines is a stop on the Alaska Marine Highway ferry route as well as a stop on the itinerary of some large Alaska cruise ships, usually as an alternative to Skagway.

The town is home to the Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve, the largest population of bald eagles in the world. Float tours within the preserve are available, including a flat-water raft ride and a guided walk in the preserve.

Other activities available to passengers stopping in town include visits to the Alaska Indian Arts Center. Located within an old U.S. Army fort, the Art Center features native carvers and artisans making totem poles, which is pretty cool to watch.

Chilkat rainforest nature hikes are also available, and the scenery on these hikes is pretty amazing. The spruce forests in the area are beautiful, and the coastline, backed by rows of majestic mountains, is simply spectacular.

So if your cruise happens to stop in Haines Alaska, you will no doubt really enjoy your time in this special little town.
