A Denali National Park tour is essential if you want to get an overview of the wonders of this amazing and breathtaking place.
Only the first 14 miles of the road into the park are open to private cars and other vehicles.
The park is absolutely enormous, so the odds are you will have to head further into the interior if you want to see much of the park.
The Park Service does offer several tours of parts of the interior, including:
Denali Natural History Tour - Travel 17 miles into the park on this tour (or 34 miles and 5 hours round trip). This tour focuses on the interesting native and pioneer history of the region. The coast is approximately $61 per adult and $35 per child. A snack and hot beverages are served.
Teklanika Tundra Wilderness Tour - 60 miles long, this 5 hour tour takes you to the Teklanika River Overlook. A naturalist is your guide as you learn about the history of the park and the tundra landscape. The price is about $65 per adult and $38 per child under 14. A box lunch is included.
Tundra Wilderness Tour - A 108 mile, 6 to 8 hour long trip teaches visitors about the park’s geography and impressive wildlife. The tour heads as far as the Toklat River, deep in the heart of the park, where wildlife such as grizzly bears, caribou, Dall sheep, and moose are plentiful. On clear days, you can get an incredible view of Mt. McKinley on this tour. The price is about $91 per adult and $61 per child. A box lunch is included.
Reservations for these tours can be made at the following website: reservedenali.com .
In my opinion, the very best tour of the park is the The Kantishna Wilderness Trails Tour offered by The Kantishna Wilderness Trails company.
This is a narrated 95 mile, 13 hour tour of Denali National Park’s interior, covering the park’s major wildlife habitat.
For a full 30 miles of the trip, passengers have a clear view of Denali (unless it is blocked by clouds).
After lunch, you can watch a dogsled competition or take part in gold panning.
The cost of this tour is $139 per person. A home-cooked lunch is included.
There are many great Denali National Park tour options for you to choose from. Whichever tour your choose, you are bound to fall in love with this truly majestic park.
