Alaska Cruise Weather

What type of weather should you expect on an Alaskan cruise and inland Alaska tour?

Just what is Alaska cruise weather like? Many people have no idea what to expect from weather to expect on an Alaskan cruise.

While Alaska cruises head past immense glaciers and ice flows, the temperature in coastal Alaska during the summer cruise season averages a refreshing 60 degrees Fahrenheit (16 degrees Celsius).

The Inside Passage, through which almost all Alaska cruises travel for up to half their journey, is a temperate rainforest, receiving anywhere from 50 to 150 inches of rain a year.

Therefore, it is often cloudy and drizzling in many of the glacier-carved fjords of coastal Alaska.

Weather changes quickly, and a cloudy, rainy morning can give way to a sunny afternoon, so it is good to bring layers of clothing on an Alaskan cruise.

Paradoxically, temparatures further north in the interior of Alaska tend to be warmer in the summertime than the temperatures in Southern coastal Alaska, due to the moderating influence of the ocean.

Therefore, it averages closer to 65 Fahrenheit during mid-summer in Anchorage, and the mid to high 70's Fahrenheit (23-26 Celsius) in Fairbanks and the Denali National Park vicinity.

Alaska cruise weather is generally cool and refreshing, a welcome relief from the intense summer heat of most locations.
