Alaska Cruise

An Alaska cruise on the Norwegian Sun

An Alaska cruise on the Norwegian Sun has been one of the most popular ways to see the Inside Passage since the ship first sailed in 2001.

The ship has a capacity of up to 1930 passengers and over 800 crew members, spread over 13 decks.

Alaska cruise on the Norwegian Sun

The Norwegian Sun was the first ship built expressly around Norwegian's "freestyle" dining concept, and therefore it has a rather astonishing nine full restaurants on board. (At least it was astonishing in 2001, though other boats have since been built around the same concept.)

Freestyle dining allows passengers taking an Alaska cruise on the Norwegian Sun to eat what they want, when they want with a variety of diverse dining options available from 5:30 AM until 9:30 PM.

Room service is also available 24 hours a day, and there is also a round the clock snack bar.

Guests preferring traditional dining (with assigned seating at the same time each night) can eat in one of two main dining rooms.

Dining options aboard the Norwegian Sun

The nine restaurants on board run the gamut from traditional cruise fare to Asian fusion fare.

The restaurants include:

  • The Seven Seas dining room - serves contemporary cuisine.
  • The Four Seasons dining room - serves traditional cruise cuisine.
  • The Garden Buffet - cafeteria style fare.
  • Las Ramblas - a tapas bar.
  • Pacific Heights - light, healthy cuisine (reservations required).
  • Steakhouse restaurant - typical steakhouse ($20 surcharge per guest).
  • Ginza - sushi (surcharge per guest).
  • Il Adagio - Italian food ($12.50 surcharge per guest).
  • Le Bistro - French cuisine ($15 surcharge per guest).
The food and service are both generally excellent aboard the Norwegian Sun, and there is enough variety to make everyone happy.

On-board activities and facilities

Facilities aboard the Norwegian Sun include five hot tubs and two pools, a casino, several bars and nightclubs, a shopping mini-mall, a health club, a baseball batting cage, a basketball court, two golf driving cages, steams rooms, and a sauna.

Activities include trivia contests, two daily movies, Broadway-type shows and dance reviews, Cirque-style shows, stand up shows, and a variety of band performances, ranging from country to rock.

The overall mood on the ship is festive, the crew helpful and cheery. The service is generally great too.

Overall, the Norwegian Sun is a beautiful ship with wonderful dining options, facilities, and activities.
